  • Dear Readers:

It is not at all pleasant to write about the predicament and intellectual misery of intellectuals in Turkey. The failure of intellectuals to fulfill their social responsibilities, to connect with the public, and their shortcomings in adopting a critical stance against authority are, in a sense, an indicator of the state of affairs in our country.

FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES OF INTELLECTUALS

Intellectuals have three fundamental duties towards society:

  • To play a pioneering role in generating ideas and creating social consciousness

  • To show courage in standing against power and authority

  • To be at the forefront of public opinion formation and activism

THE CONCEPT AND DEFINITION OF "INTELLECTUAL"

There are certain criteria for individuals to be defined as "intellectuals," but these criteria are not fixed and universal; they can change over time, according to societies and cultures. Generally, the following criteria stand out for defining an intellectual individual:

  1. Knowledge Accumulation and Education Level:

  • Intellectuals are generally individuals with a deep accumulation of knowledge. This knowledge can be both academic and practical. Having broad knowledge across different disciplines, not just specializing in one subject, is one of the signs of being an intellectual.

  • A high level of education can be an important criterion, but intellectuality is not solely based on diplomas. Even if a person has not received formal education, they can possess a wide range of knowledge and critical thinking skills.

  1. Critical Thinking Ability:

  • An intellectual is someone who can look at events and information with a critical eye. They do not just accept existing information but question it and try to understand it more deeply.

  • Critical thinking requires an independent stance against all kinds of ideologies and pressures. These individuals constantly question their own thoughts and the power dynamics in the social structure.

  1. Sense of Social Responsibility:

  • Intellectuals are concerned with social issues. Instead of focusing solely on individual success, they strive to contribute to the problems of the society they live in and their solutions.

  • Individuals who generate ideas for the betterment of society and put these ideas into practice are considered intellectuals. Universal values such as social justice, human rights, and freedom are often at the center of intellectual discussions.

  1. Independence and Free Thought:

  • Intellectual individuals possess independent thought against external influences or pressures. They do not blindly believe in the existing dogmas or prejudices of society. Instead, they develop a system of thought based on their own experiences, readings, and observations.

  1. Creativity and Innovation:

  • Intellectuals are individuals who not only repeat existing knowledge but also generate new ideas and solutions. They bring new perspectives to society, introducing innovations in art, science, or social structure.

  • This creative way of thinking can sometimes mean challenging society's generally accepted norms.

  1. Dialogue and Openness:

  • Intellectuals are open to continuous learning and exchange of ideas. They respect different views and try to understand them. Even when faced with opposing ideas, they seek constructive dialogue.

  • In addition to being open to criticism, they have a structure that constantly develops and re-evaluates their own ideas.

After saying all this, I would like to ask the following question: Do those whom we define as intellectuals in Turkey, or who consider themselves in this category, align with the above criteria?

The answer, unfortunately, would be a resounding "No!"

THE MISERY OF INTELLECTUALS IN BULLET POINTS

First, I would like to list the misery and deprivation of intellectuals in Turkey in bullet points.

  1. Weakness of Independent Thought:

  1. Weak Development of Critical Thinking:

  1. Insufficient Sense of Social Responsibility:

  1. Lack of Intellectual Courage:

  1. Limited Intellectual Production:

  1. Insufficiency of Universal Perspective:

  1. Imitation Instead of Idea Generation:

  1. Weakness of Intellectual Cooperation:

  1. Detachment from Society

  1. Conformity with Authority

  1. Polemics and Debates Instead of Idea Generation

  1. Insecurity and Lack of Idealism Among Intellectuals

  1. Polarization and Partisanship of Intellectuals

  1. Avoidance of Political Risk

CONCLUSION: THE PATH TO ESCAPE INTELLECTUAL MISERY

  • Independence and courage: Intellectuals must produce thought independently and courageously, free from material or political interests.

  • Solidarity and collective movements: To prevent the isolation of individual intellectuals, it is important to create collective thought and movements. Establishing cultural and social solidarity networks and accelerating intellectual interaction are gaining importance.

  • New media and digital platforms: In today's world, intellectuals need to use new media and digital platforms more effectively to reach society. In an environment where traditional channels are narrowing, seeking alternative ways can be an important way out of this misery.
