Humanity's Heritage and Sweet Lies

This essay explores how national ideals, while sacred, can devolve into dangerous ideologies, using examples like Turanism, Aryanism, and Zionism, and critiques a scholar's attempt to link Native Americans to Turks through superficial similarities.

Dear Readers:

Let's admit it, every nation, every people, every ethnic group has a hidden ideal: Turan, Aryan, Kurdistan, Zionism, Zhou, Atlantis, etc.

These ideals are sacred and are humanity's heritage. There is no shame in voicing them. They are historical and cultural bridges that connect people to the past.

However, sometimes these "ideals" can turn into a dangerous ideology and lead to a great catastrophe for humanity. The most obvious example of this was Hitler's obsession with the Aryan Race. Hitler transformed the Aryan ideal into Nazi ideology. You know the bitter end of this adventure as well as I do. Similarly, Enver Pasha's Turan obsession was a step in this direction. The "Greater Kurdistan" ideal has turned into a sharp and destructive ideology for Abdullah Öcalan. Likewise, Theodor Herzl's Zionist (Greater Israel) ideal has turned into an endless expansionist ideology with the establishment of the State of Israel.

In Chinese history, the term "Zhou" refers to an important period and dynasty that laid the foundation of Chinese civilization. It is considered a period of cultural advancement, philosophical development, and political stability. The term "Zhou" is revered as a symbol of China's ancient heritage and historical continuity.

The "Zhou" ideal, which aimed to re-establish the historical Chinese Empire, has today transformed into the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party. With this ideology, China has occupied the Uyghur and Tibetan countries. To establish Greater China, it threatens Taiwan and its neighbors, creates tension, and is constantly arming itself to achieve this goal.

In the meantime, I would like to open a parenthesis and mention the "Atlantis" ideal. Atlantis is an island first mentioned by Plato, a legend of a lost civilization that sank into the sea. Today, the term "Atlantis" is generally used as a symbol in the sense of a utopian society, serving as a metaphor for an advanced ancient civilization that met a mysterious fate. Who knows, one day someone among us might create an Atlantis ideology and start a war by saying, "I will re-establish Atlantis."

A topic that has been brought up from time to time in newspapers and magazines since my childhood was taken up by our esteemed Professor Akay Aktaş in his column. He wrote an article titled "The Proximity of Turks and Native Americans." For curious readers, the link is below:

https://igdirabakis.com/kose-yazilari/31238/

Professor Akay's article, written with reference to the book "TURKS AND NATIVE AMERICANS" by Ordinaryüs Professor Doctor Reha Oğuz Türkkan, bears the bitter traces of Turan ideology. As I said, the Turan Ideal is sacred in terms of historical identity and connection, but when it turns into an ideology, it inevitably brings with it the idea of hatred and denial.

In the said article, sometimes directly and sometimes implicitly, expressions and definitions implying "The Whole World is Turkish" are interwoven, and a misleading path is followed to deceive the reader by taking refuge behind empty claims, as if whatever the "Ordinaryüs" gentleman says is true.

If you wish, let's look at the connection between Turks and Native Americans from a different perspective:

THE ICE AGE AND THE BERING STRAIT

Once, Asia and America were connected by the Bering land bridge

The Ice Age is a period that left its mark on world history. Regions far from the equator were covered with vast ice sheets and glaciers. Especially due to the icebergs at the poles, the ocean level was 100 m lower than it is today. The continents of Asia and America (present-day Alaska) were connected by the Bering land bridge. In those years, the people living in this region were hunter-gatherer societies. Writing had not yet been invented. Their speech consisted of a limited number of words. Since the Neolithic Age had not yet developed, neither carpets nor rugs nor tent-like items had been invented. They were neither Chinese nor Turkish nor Eskimo nor Japanese. They were human communities living in the Stone Age.

The last ice age, the Pleistocene Epoch, began approximately 2.6 million years ago and ended approximately 12,000 years ago. While the Ice Age continued, people crossed to the North and South American continents via the Bering land bridge, probably following their prey. 12,000 years ago, when the glaciers melted, the Neolithic period (agriculture and domestication of animals) was just beginning or had not yet begun in these regions. When the glaciers melted and the ocean level rose, the 82 km long Bering land bridge was submerged. The people living on the American continent were separated from Asia. All they brought from Asia were the stone tools they used for hunting and the strange sounds they made. Of course, there was no talk of carpets, alphabets, languages, or tents.

Our Ordinaryüs Professor, with his superior intelligence, tries to prove that Native Americans are "Turks" by saying that the motifs on the carpets used by Native Americans are the same as Turkish carpet motifs. How can he ignore that these human communities did not take carpets with them when they went to America?

Poor Ordinaryüs! When the Bering Strait was submerged and Asia and America were separated, humanity had not yet invented how to make carpets and tents. Moreover, the center of carpets and rugs is Mesopotamia. The region that first transitioned to the Neolithic period is Mesopotamia, due to its proximity to the equator and temperate climate. My readers will understand the subject better if I say that the Neolithic period began in Mesopotamia 10,000 years ago, right after the Bering Strait was submerged.

NEOLITHIC PERIOD

I would like to briefly introduce the Neolithic period to my readers who have little interest in history:

The Neolithic period is the period when humans transitioned from hunting and gathering to settled agricultural communities. It began independently in more than one region around the world.

Some of the oldest known Neolithic settlements include:

Fertile Crescent / Mesopotamia: It is considered one of the main regions where agriculture and settled life first began. Settlements such as Jericho in Palestine and Çatalhöyük in Turkey are among the oldest known Neolithic settlements.

Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Cyprus): The region was a place where early agricultural practices developed and Neolithic settlements such as Knossos on the island of Crete emerged.

China: Neolithic agricultural societies emerged in various regions of China. Sites such as Peiligang and Yangshao provide evidence of early agricultural communities.

South Asia: Mehrgarh in present-day Pakistan is one of the oldest Neolithic settlements in the Indian subcontinent.

These places are where evidence of early agriculture, domestication of plants and animals, and the establishment of settled communities are found. It is considered a sign of the transition from the Paleolithic (Stone Age) to the Neolithic period. The Neolithic revolution occurred independently in different regions of the world over a long process; therefore, there is no single "first" place for this transition.

In Mesopotamia, the Neolithic period began around 10,000 to 8,000 BCE. This period includes significant developments in human civilization. It marks the transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to settled agricultural communities.

Mesopotamia, known as the "land between the rivers" (referring to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers), is one of the oldest regions where agriculture, domestication of plants and animals, and the development of settled villages and towns flourished.

The fertile lands between these rivers allowed for the cultivation of agricultural products and the establishment of irrigation systems, which contributed to the development of agricultural practices and settled life.

During this period, significant developments occurred such as pottery making, domestication of animals like sheep and goats, cultivation of grains like wheat and barley, and the establishment of simple irrigation systems. These innovations laid the foundation for the rise of complex societies and the development of ancient civilizations such as the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians in the region.

The further north one goes, the later the Neolithic period began. For example, on the Korean Peninsula, the Neolithic period began around 6000 BCE.

NATIVE AMERICAN LANGUAGE AND TURKISH

Our glorious Ordinaryüs gentleman then tries to prove their kinship linguistically by comparing the Native American language with Turkish and presents the following table to our attention:

Table prepared by the Ordinaryüs

When human communities living in the Stone Age, i.e., the hunter-gatherer period, crossed from Asia to America using the Bering land bridge, they did not have a language in the sense we understand today. The number of words they used was limited. There was no alphabet either.

Before going into a more detailed explanation, I would like to draw your attention to two words in the table presented above:

The word "TEMMUZ" is not Turkish. It is of Hebrew/Sumerian origin.

The word "MISIR" is the name of a country in Northeast Africa. It is derived from the Arabic word miṣr (city, country). The corn and potatoes we love to eat were brought from America to Europe in the 15th century after the discovery of America. Since the corn plant was brought to the Ottoman country from Egypt, this plant was named "mısır." In short, when human communities crossed the Bering land bridge and went to America, unfortunately, "corn" was not being cultivated anywhere in the world.

A similar situation applies to the poultry bird, the turkey. Since it was brought to Turkey from India, this poultry bird was named "hindi" in Turkey. Interestingly, when this poultry bird was later taken from Turkey to Europe, Europeans deemed the name "turkey" appropriate for it because it came from Turkey. Today, the word "turkey" in English means both the bird and the country. Our President rightly applied to the United Nations to use the word "Türkiye" instead of "Turkey" to prevent this confusion.

All other words in the table emerged during and after the Neolithic period. That is, when human communities crossed the Bering land bridge and settled in America, none of these words were in use.

NATIVE AMERICAN LANGUAGES

Native American language groups in North America only

The Ordinaryüs gentleman implies that Native Americans living in North and South America today speak a single language. And he bothered to examine this language and noticed its similarities with Turkish.

However, it is difficult to give an exact number of different Native American languages that exist on the American continent today because evaluations and classifications on this subject can vary. It is estimated that hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of different indigenous languages were spoken in North, Central, and South America before European contact.

Although many Native American languages are still known to exist today, many are endangered or have disappeared over time. A common estimate is that there are between 250 and 300 different Native American languages existing today.

It is certainly possible to carry out the desired manipulation with sound and word similarities among so many different languages.

I suppose what most surprises the Ordinaryüs gentleman is how Native Americans (Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, and others) could have used the same carpet pattern.

Another interesting topic is the comparison of calendars. The Ordinaryüs gentleman draws attention to the incredible similarity between the Turkish calendar and the Aztec-Maya calendar. He presents a picture of a Turkish calendar consisting of 12 animals. However, that calendar is the Chinese calendar. Chinese astrology and the Chinese zodiac system associate each year with a specific animal in a twelve-year cycle.

Although the Maya civilization used animal symbols in its iconography and mythologies, it did not feature animal figures in its calendar representations.

The Maya civilization had a complex calendar system. The Mayans used multiple interconnected calendars to track time, agricultural cycles, religious ceremonies, and historical events. One of the most famous components of the Maya calendar system is the Long Count calendar.

The Long Count calendar is a linear and cyclical calendar that calculates the number of days from a legendary starting point. It consists of different units of time such as k'in (day), winal (20 days), tun (360 days), k'atun (7,200 days), and b'ak'tun (144,000 days).

CONCLUSION

When hunter-gatherer human communities crossed to America, they only had stone weapons. With the submergence of the Bering land bridge, the world was divided into two: America and Asia/Europe/Africa. This separation continued for thousands of years. The peoples of Asia-Europe-Africa were in communication with each other.

These human communities, living separately, experienced and discovered similar processes: the Neolithic period, the use of metals, the domestication of animals, agriculture, war, the construction of pyramids, religion, alphabet, writing, mathematics, astronomy, calendar, pottery making, irrigation systems, houses, windows, doors, roads, family, slavery, religious ceremonies, etc.

Since the Ordinaryüs gentleman cannot make sense of people creating the same things without being in communication with each other, he tries to imply that they must have learned all these things from the Turks.

Mr. Ordinaryüs! Today, Mayan hieroglyphs have not been fully deciphered. Instead of wasting your time on trivial matters, you should at least try to earn the title of "Ordinaryüs" by deciphering Mayan hieroglyphs.
